I, admittedly, am clueless when it comes to football and anything relating to the Super Bowl. I believe I spent 30 minutes max watching the game on Sunday. The ads I saw were so-so, except for one. The Green Police Audi Super Bowl Ad. It was the bright spot for me and had my husband commenting that he was looking for me in the ad. Yes, I’m the one who lectures everyone in the house about energy usage, trash separation, and my biggie – composting. If someone in our household even tries to throw out his/her banana peel in the trash, I will make them pull it out of the trash and put it in the compost pail. My husband and I even bring home our fruit waste from work everyday. The compost pale is conveniently located under the kitchen sink and gets emptied frequently. If you consider that 12-16% of landfill waste is derived from food going into the weekly trash pickup, you can understand why I think that composting is one of the basic strategies to reducing your household’s carbon footprint. Even more importantly, it can be used in your summer and fall gardening.
So, while I definitely appreciated the humor used in the Super Bowl ad to talk about greening efforts, there is an important message. I think it’s easier and cheaper to compost and change out light bulbs than to buy a new car… For a great resource on composting, just go to Organic Gardening’s website at: www.organicgardening.com
